| Poet and journalist, born in Co Monaghan, NE Ireland. He settled in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1869, and came to be regarded as the local equivalent of Tennyson and Longfellow. His reputation declined in the 1930s, but he is remembered as the author of the national anthem, ‘God Defend New Zealand!’. |
