| English clergyman and statesman, the third son of Robert FitzAlan, Earl of Arundel. Chancellor of England (1386–96), he became Archbishop of York in 1388 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1396. Banished by Richard II in 1397, he returned from exile with Henry IV and crowned him in 1399. He then became Chancellor again, and was a bitter opponent of the Lollards. |
