Although he began with lyrical and romantic poetry in the tradition of Marsman, his prose is regarded as more significant. He pre-eminently wrote historical novels of which Het meisje met het rode haar (1956, The Red-haired Girl), the story of the resistance fighter Hannie Schaft, remains notable in Dutch war literature.
