| Writer and critic, born in Tarbes, S France. From painting he turned to literature, and became an extreme Romantic. In 1830 he published his first long poem, ‘Albertus’, and his celebrated novel Mademoiselle de Maupin appeared in 1835. His most important collection was Emaux et camées (1852, Enamels and Cameos). |
