| biography:
| Protestant theologian, born in Basel, N Switzerland. He became Church President (1929) and Bishop of the Protestant Landeskirche in Württemberg (1933). From 1933 onwards he was spokesman for the Church resistance to national socialist interference in Church affairs, and in 1945–9 was chairman of the Council of the Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland (EKD). |
