| A poet of the Gothic people, born in N Spain. He wrote in Latin and was highly respected for his learning at the court of Charlemagne, who appointed him Bishop of Orleans. He was imprisoned by Louis de Pious in 818, and while incarcerated he composed the ‘Gloria, laus et honor’, a section of which is used in Palm Sunday processions. Among his many other poems is ‘Ad Carolum regem’. |
