| biography:
| Christian theologian, born in Antioch, S Turkey (formerly Syria). He was made Bishop of Mopsuestia in Cilicia in 392. He wrote commentaries (mostly now lost) on almost all the books of Scripture, adopting a literal meaning in preference to the use of allegorical interpretation. As the teacher of Nestorius, he was perhaps the founder of Nestorianism, and his views on the Incarnation were condemned by the fifth ecumenical council in 553. |
