| Clergyman and university president, born in Syracuse, New York, USA. An ordained Roman Catholic priest, he became indelibly identified with Notre Dame University, where he was president (1952–87) in a term that secularized and integrated the university and brought the athletic department under administrative control. He was a charter member of the Civil Rights Commission (1957–72). |
