| Byzantine empress (527–47). She was an actress, dancer, and prostitute who became mistress, then wife, of Justinian (525). A woman of great intelligence and courage, she played a major role throughout his long and distinguished reign, and probably saved his throne during the Nika riots by her intervention (532). |
