| biography:
| Writer, born in Berlin, Germany. During World War 1 he served in the German navy and took part in the naval revolt in Wilhelmshaven in 1918. He went into exile in 1933 and spent many years in Moscow. His documentary novels contain many autobiographical elements, reveal his social commitment, and show him to be a New Functionalist. His major work is the trilogy Stalingrad-Moskau-Berlin (1945, 1952, 1954), an account of the Eastern Front drawn from eye-witness accounts and historical records. He also wrote plays including Die Seeschlacht am Skagerrak (1935). |
