| Biologist and pioneer of cytology, born in Bamberg, SEC Germany. He studied at Munich, and from 1893 taught zoology and anatomy at Würzburg. His studies of cell-division in the roundworm Ascaris and in sea-urchin eggs showed that normal development requires an appropriate number of chromosomes for the species, and that chromosome deficiency leads to abnormality. |
