| King of the Lombards (590–616). As Duke of Turin, he married Autari's widow, Theodolinda, and succeeded him to the throne. He asserted his authority on rebel dukes, conquered Padua (601), and forced the Byzantine exarch to pay him a tribute. Although an Arian, under the influence of the Catholic Theodolinda he promoted the spread of Catholicism among his people and sustained a policy of conciliation with Pope Gregory I. |
