| biography:
| French painter, born in San Domingo, Antilles. Deeply influenced by his teacher, Ingres, and by Delacroix, his work is often erotic and depicts scenes from North African life, the Bible, and classical themes. He also produced pencil portraits in the style of Ingres. His works include ‘The Two Sisters’ (1840), ‘Desdemona’ (1849), and ‘Moorish Dancers’ (1849) all housed in the Louvre. |
