| British pop singing group, with members Victoria (‘Vicki’) Addams, known as ‘Posh Spice’ (1975– ), born in Hertfordshire; Melanie Jayne Chisholm, or ‘Mel(anie) C’, known as ‘Sporty Spice’ (1975– ), born in Liverpool; Melanie Janine Brown, or ‘Mel(anie) B’, known as ‘Scary Spice’ (1975 – ), born in Yorkshire; Emma Lee Bunton, or ‘Emma’, known as ‘Baby Spice’ (1976– ), born in Finchley, N London; and Geri Estelle Halliwell, or ‘Geri’, known as ‘Ginger Spice’ (1972– ), born in Watford, Hertfordshire. From earlier careers as dancers, singers, or models, they came together in 1996, their first record, ‘Wannabe!’, becoming a number 1 hit in the UK. Later hits were ‘Say You'll Be There’ (1996), ‘2 Become 1’ (1996), and ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ (1997). The group made a feature film, Spiceworld - the Movie, in 1997. Geri left the group in 1998, and was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Population Fund later that year. All remaining members have since gone on to release solo singles. Victoria married footballer David Beckham in 1999. In 2000 they made pop history by becoming the first female group to have had nine number 1 singles when their double A-sided ‘Holler Holler/Let Love Lead the Way’ went straight to number 1 in the charts. |
