| US singing/instrumental group, formed in California in 1961, consisting originally of brothers Brian Wilson (1942– , vocalist, bass guitar, keyboards, songwriter), Carl Wilson (1946–98, vocalist, guitar) and Dennis Wilson (1944–83, vocalist, drums), with cousin Mike Love (1941– , vocalist) and Al(an) Jardine (1942– , vocalist, bass guitar, guitar); later also Bruce Johnston (1944– ) and others. They found fame in the 1960s with Brian's cheerful songs of teenage West Coast life, surfing, fast cars and motorcycles, and all-American girls, including ‘I Get Around’, ‘California Girls’, and ‘Good Vibrations’. In 1966, with the technically innovative album Pet Sounds, an increasingly reclusive Brian Wilson emulated the Beatles' imaginative use of recording techniques in a ‘concept album’. Later, more pensive hit singles included ‘I Can Hear Music’ and ‘Darling’. |
