| biography:
| British stateswoman, born in London. Educated at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and London, she became a Labour councillor in Camden (1971–86) where she chaired the social services committee. Before becoming Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood in 1992, she was active in the voluntary sector, being deputy director of MIND (1974–86), director of community care special project, Birmingham (1986–90), and director of Rowntree Foundation projects (1990–92). Following a number of shadow posts, she became minister for public health in 1997, and employment minster. She was appointed secretary of state for culture, media and sport (2001– ). |
