| Consultant and former hostage, born in Bollington, Cheshire, NWC England, UK. After several posts as an adviser and administrator for various Church projects, including periods in Africa, in 1980 he became Adviser to the Archbishop of Canterbury on Anglican Communion Affairs. As the Archbishop's special envoy (from 1980), he was particularly involved in negotiations to secure the release of hostages held in the Middle East; between 1982 and the end of 1986, 14 hostages, for whom he was interceding, were released. He was himself kidnapped in Beirut in January 1987 while involved in secret negotiations to win the release of hostages held in Lebanon, and not released until November 1991. A volume of memoirs, Taken on Trust, was published in 1993. |
