| US senator and governor, born in Laurinburg, North Carolina, USA. A World War 2 army hero, he became a lawyer and state senator in 1953. As governor (Democrat, North Carolina, 1961–5), he sponsored progressive legislation including the Higher Education Act (1963) and the North Carolina Fund (1963). After writing Storm over the States (1967), he became president of Duke University (1969–87). He took office as North Carolina's senator in 1987. |
