| Novelist, born in Port Huron, Michigan, USA. She studied at Berkeley and Columbia universities and later taught at the universities of Wyoming (1987–90) and Arizona (1990–2). She began writing in her mid-thirties, publishing Mama (1987) followed by a string of best-selling novels including Disappearing Acts (1989), Waiting to Exhale (1992; filmed 1995), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1996), and A Day Late and a Dollar Short (2001). She is also editor of Breaking Ice: An Anthology of Contemporary African-American Fiction (1990). |
