| biography:
| Irish nationalist, born in Cork, Co Cork, S Ireland. He trained as an accountant, and wrote poetry and plays before becoming a major influence in forming the Irish Volunteers in Cork in 1913. He accepted MacNeill's countermanding of the Easter Rising in 1916, and was elected Sinn Féin MP for West Cork in 1918. In 1920 he was elected Lord Mayor of Cork, and was arrested the following August, being sentenced by court-martial to two years' imprisonment. Transferred to Brixton Prison, he died after a 74-day hunger strike which had aroused worldwide sympathy. Among those deeply influenced by his sacrifice was the future Ho Chi-Minh, then working in the kitchens of the Ritz Hotel, London. |
