| biography:
| Latin comic poet, born in Carthage, N Africa. He became the slave of a Roman senator, who gave him an education in Rome and freed him. His successful first play, Andria (166 BC, The Andrian Girl), introduced him to Roman society, where his chief patrons were Laclius and the younger Scipio. His surviving six comedies are Greek in origin and scene, directly based on Menander. Many of his conventions were later used by European playwrights. |
