name: Scipio Aemilianus
in full Scipio Aemilianus Publius Cornelius, also called Scipio Africanus Minor

pronunciation: [skipioh aymiliahn

sex: male
lived: (185–129 BC)

biography: Roman statesman, general, and orator, the adopted grandson of Scipio Africanus Major. He is famous primarily for the sack of Carthage in the Third Punic War (146 BC), the destruction of Numantia (133 BC), and his patronage of the arts. Members of the so-called Scipionic circle included the historian Polybius, the Stoic Panaetius, the poet Lucilius, and the playwright Terence. His opposition to the reforms of the Gracchi may have been the cause of his sudden death, possibly by poison.
