| biography:
| Economist and sociologist, born in Kiev, Ukraine. She studied at Moscow University, and wrote the ‘Novosibirsk Memorandum’ (1983), a criticism of the Soviet economic system which was one of the factors behind policy change in Russia in the late 1980s. She joined the Communist Party in 1954, and has been a full member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences since 1981. She was personal adviser to President Gorbachev on economic and social matters. As an academic, she has been involved in the development of economic sociology. |
