| Christian thinker, from Syria. He became a pupil of the martyr Justin in Rome, and was converted to Christianity by him. After Justin's death c.165 he was estranged from the Catholic Church, and returned to Syria (c.172). There he established, or was at least closely associated with, an ascetic religious community of Encratites, which fostered a heretical combination of Christianity and Stoicism. His Diatessaron (‘Out of Four’) is a version of the four Gospels arranged as a continuous narrative, which in its Syriac version was used as a text in the Syrian Church for centuries. |
