| Painter, born in Edo (modern Tokyo). The son of a poet, he was familiar with the styles of various schools and Chinese works, and attempted a synthesis of these with European techniques. An illustrator of books and a prolific painter of a variety of subjects, he excelled in landscapes. He also introduced the Nanga style of painting to Edo. |
