| Japanese conductor. He studied at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and the Vienna Hochschule, and was a student with the NHK (Japanese Broadcasting Corporation) Symphony Orchestra (1968–70), making his professional debut with the NHK (1971), and his US debut in 1985. He became conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra (1971–91, laureate 1991– ), principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (1987–95, laureate 1996– ), and music adviser and principal conductor of the Kioi Sinfonietta, Japan (1995– ). |
