| Pope (999–1003), born in Aurillac, SC France. Renowned for his achievements in chemistry, mathematics, and philosophy, he is said to have introduced Arabic numerals and to have invented clocks. He became Abbot of Bobbio (982) and Archbishop of Ravenna (988). As pope, he upheld the primacy of Rome against the separatist tendencies of the French Church. |
