| Geographer, born in London, UK. He studied at Kings College, London, then held various teaching appointments at London University, becoming professor of geography there (1944–63). His original research was in geology, but he played a leading role in the establishment of geomorphology within British geography. He was an adviser to post-war governments on Greater London, new towns, and on the use of sands and gravel. |
