| biography:
| Film director and producer, born in South Bend, Indiana, USA. He began as an actor, moved to television directing, and made his debut as a feature film director with Slender Thread (1965). Later films include They Shoot Horses Don't They? (1969), Sabrina (1995), and Random Hearts (1999). He received an Oscar nomination for Best Director in 1982 for Tootsie, and won two Oscars (as Best Director and Best Producer) in 1985 for Out of Africa. In 1998 he directed Sliding Doors, and in 1999 he played the part of Victor Ziegler in Eyes Wide Shut. He directed Up at the Villa in 2000. |
