| Lawyer, born in Johannesburg, NE South Africa. He served with South African forces in World War 2, studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and in Oxford, and was admitted to the bar in 1949. He became the leading lawyer for the defence in political trials in South Africa; his notable cases include the Treason Trial (1958–61), the Prisons Trial (1968–9), and the Steve Biko inquest (1977). He was admitted to the bar in England in 1977, and was appointed QC in 1984. He has been a Judge of Appeal in Botswana, and also in Jersey and Guernsey. |
