| British soldier, writer, and inventor, born in Bangalore, S India. One of the originators of the tank, he was responsible for the use of the word to describe armoured fighting vehicles. Under his pseudonym he wrote The Green Curve (1909), A Year Ago (1916), and several translations. He later became professor of military history at Oxford (1925–39). |
