| Explorer and geographer, born in Stockholm, Sweden. He went to Persia as a tutor (1885), and was attached to a Swedish–Norwegian embassy to the Shah in 1890. He made many journeys into uncharted areas, particularly in the Himalayas (1893–8), the Gobi Desert (1899–1902), and Tibet, of which he made the first detailed map (1908). After World War 1 he organized and led the Sino–Swedish Scientific Expedition to the NW provinces of China (1927–33). A gifted writer, his accounts of his journeys achieved much popularity. |
