| Footballer and football manager, born in Torsby, W Sweden. A knee injury in 1975 playing for the Swedish second division side Karlskoga brought his career as a player to an end. After a period coaching the third division Swedish side Degers, he joined IFK Gothenburg in 1980 and with them won the Swedish championship, two domestic titles, and the 1982 UEFA Cup. He had two periods with the Portuguese side Benfica (1982–84, 1989–91) guiding them to the 1990 European Cup final and the 1991 league title. He coached the Italian teams AS Roma (1984–86), winning with them the Italian Cup title in 1986, Fiorentina (1987–98), Sampdoria (1991–96), and Lazio (1997–2001) taking them to their first European trophy, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1999 and the Italian league and cup double in 1999–2000. In 2001 he became manager of the England football team. |
