| Indonesian nationalist and lawyer, born in Padang Pandjang, Sumatra. After reading law at Leiden he joined the national movement, became a leader of the Pendidikan Nasional Indonesia, and was interned by the Dutch (1934–42). He joined the resistance during the Japanese occupation. He claimed to believe in parliamentary democracy and became premier of ‘independent Indonesia’ (1945–7). With Schermerhorn he drew up the Linggadjati agreement, and in 1948 founded the moderate Indonesian Socialist Party (Partai Socialis Indonesia), which was banned in 1960. He was interned again (1962–5) for opposition to Sukarno. |
