| Film actress, born in New York City, USA. Educated at the Catholic University of America, Washington, she began her screen career in Joe (1970), and became well known after her role in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975). Later films include The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Thelma and Louise (1991), Dead Man Walking (1995, Oscar), Earthly Possessions (1999), and Moonlight Mile (2002). A commitment to political activism brought her into the public eye in 1993, when she and co-star Tim Robbins interrupted the Academy Awards ceremony in order to draw attention to the situation of HIV-positive Haitian refugees. |
