| Playwright and novelist, born in Davenport, Iowa, USA. She studied at Drake University, Des Moines, IA, then worked as a local reporter before concentrating on writing short stories and novels. With her husband, George Carm Cook (d.1924), she founded the Provincetown Playhouse (1915), which introduced the plays of Eugene O'Neill. Her novels include Fidelity (1915), Brook Evans (1928), and The Fugitive's Return (1929), but she is best-remembered for her dramatic work, notably Bernice (1919), Inheritors (1921), and Alison's House (1931, Pulitzer), based on the life of Emily Dickinson. |
