| biography:
| Ottoman Sultan (1520–66). He added to his dominions by conquest Belgrade, Budapest, Rhodes, Tabriz, Baghdad, Aden, and Algiers. His fleets dominated the Mediterranean, though he failed to capture Malta. His system of laws regulating land tenure earned him the name Kanuni (‘law-giver’), and he was a great patron of arts and architecture. He died during the siege of Szigeth in his war with Austria. |
