| Churchman, and abbot of St Denis from 1122, born near Paris. He carried out substantial reforms, and rebuilt the church of St Denis in the Gothic style, the first of its kind. Louis VI and Louis VII employed him on a number of missions, and during the latter's absence on the second crusade, Suger was one of the regents. He wrote a life of Louis VI, which is valuable for the view it affords of the time. |
