| biography:
| English noblewoman, the daughter of Charles Stuart, Earl of Lennox, the younger brother of Lord Darnley. During the reign of Elizabeth I, she was recognized as second in succession to the English throne after her first cousin, King James VI of Scotland. When he became James I of England (1603), he had her imprisoned (1609), fearful of his position if she married. After her release she met and in 1610 secretly married William Seymour (1588–1660, later Duke of Somerset), for which they were again imprisoned. She died in the Tower of London. |
