| biography:
| British statesman, born in Essex, SE England, UK. He studied at Leeds University, became president of the National Union of Students (1969–71), and was called to the bar in 1972. He became a member of Islington Council (1971–8), and was elected an MP in 1979. After holding several junior posts, he became the opposition spokesman on Treasury and economic affairs (1981–3) and the environment (1983–7), then joined the shadow cabinet, and was spokesman on education (1987–92), environment and local government (1992–3), local government (1993–4), and home affairs (1994–7). He became home secretary in the 1997 Labour government, and secretary of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs in 2001. |
