Jude, St or Thaddeus
|
| biography:
| One of the 12 Apostles. He is called ‘Judas (son) of James’ (Luke 6.16, Acts 1.13), and appears to correspond to the Thaddeus mentioned in Mark 3.18 and Matthew 10.3, perhaps to avoid confusion with Judas Iscariot. He is traditionally thought to have preached and healed in Mesopotamia and Persia. Some scholars have considered him the author of the Letter of Jude, who is there described as ‘Judas, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James’, but this identification is disputed. He is traditionally thought to have been martyred in Persia with St Simon, whose feast is held on the same day. Feast day 28 October (W), 19 June or 21 August (E). |
