| Mathematician, born in Garden, Stirling, C Scotland, UK. He was expelled from Oxford for corresponding with Jacobites, and went to Venice to complete his studies. There he discovered the secrets of the Venetian glass-makers, and published a work on their techniques. His principal work was Methodus differentialis (1730), in which he made important advances in the theory of infinite series and finite differences, and gave an approximate formula for the factorial function still in use and named after him. |
