| biography:
| Anglo-Saxon prince, the son of Edward the Ætheling and grandson of Edmund Ironside. Though chosen as king by some influential Englishmen after the battle of Hastings, he was never crowned. He submitted to William the Conquerer (1066), but then rebelled and fled to Scotland (1068). He was finally reconciled with William in 1074. He joined Robert Curthose, to fight against Henry I for the English crown, but was taken prisoner at the Battle of Tinchebrai (1106), and lived in obscurity after his release. |
