| Computer inventor and entrepreneur, born in San Francisco, California, USA. He studied at Reed College, Portland, before becoming a computer hobbyist. He was co-founder with ex-Hewlett-Packard engineer Stephen Wozniak (1950– ), of the Apple Computer Co in a garage in 1976. Their brainchild, the Apple II computer (1977), the first ‘open system’ machine designed to encourage others to write programs and build add-on hardware for it, helped launch the personal computer, and made their company the fastest growing in US history. In 1985 he left Apple and founded a new company, NeXT Inc, but he later returned to Apple. |
