| Poet, teacher, and writer, born in Washington, District of Columbia, USA. He studied at Williams College (1925 BA) and Harvard (1930 MA), and was based in Washington, DC. He taught primarily at Howard University (1929–69), and is known as a poet and founder of black literary criticism, as in Negro Poetry and Drama (1937). Above all he was an influential teacher and exponent of African-American writers in the decades before they were widely recognized. |
