| biography:
| Pope (1198–1216), born in Anagni, C Italy. His pontificate is regarded as the high point of the temporal and spiritual supremacy of the Roman see. He proclaimed the Fourth Crusade (1202–4) to recover the Holy Places, judged between rival emperors in Germany, and had Otto IV deposed. He laid England under an interdict, and excommunicated King John for refusing to recognize Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury. Under him the fourth Lateran Council was held in 1215. |
