| Judge, born in Haddam, Connecticut, USA. The brother of David Dudley Field and Cyrus W Field, he served on California's state legislature (1850–7) and supreme court (1857–63) before President Lincoln named him to the US Supreme Court (1863–97). A staunch conservative, he frequently dissented from the court's majority opinion. |
