| British statesman, born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, C England, UK. He studied at Liverpool University, and was a university lecturer before becoming Labour MP for Wallsend (1992– ). A former deputy leader of North Tyneside council and leader of the Council of Local Education Authorities, he was an opposition whip (1994–5) and spokeman on education and employment (1995–7) before becoming secretary of state for trade and industry (1997–2001) and for transport, local government and the regions (2001–2), resigning after a period of personal upheaval within his department and heavy criticism of his handling of the country's rail problems. |
