| Teacher and Russia expert, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Known as a consultant and commentator on the former Soviet Union for National Broadcasting Company TV News, he served on the editorial board of Slavic Review and as associate editor of World Politics. He was also a member of the advisory council on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe for the National Academy of Sciences, and of the board of directors of the American Committee on US–Soviet Relations, among others. Teaching longest at Princeton at the Center for International Studies (1969), he directed the Russian Studies Programme (1973–80) and produced many books and articles on Eastern Europe. |
