| Strip cartoonist, born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK. After art studies and advertising agency work he teamed with his brother, copywriter Frank Dowling, to create newspaper strips, starting with Tich (1931) in the Daily Mirror, followed by Ruggles (1935–60), a family soap opera, and Belinda Blue-Eyes (1936–42), before the enormously successful fantasy super-hero Garth (1942). |
